Composting Info

Hello everyone,

Some folks in the neighborhood have expressed interest in composting. Why compost? EPA states, "Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard waste together currently make up more than 28 percent of what we throw away, and should be composted instead. Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas." (https://www.epa.gov/recycle/composting-home)

So, how should one go about this process? As a composter, I can speak to how we do it. We place our food scraps into a canister with a carbon filter and biodegradable lining. (See picture 1 of white filtered canister.)

When the canister gets full, we either put the biodegradable bag into our backyard composter, spin it, wait for it to turn to soil, and use the resulting soil for planting. (See picture 2 of black composter in backyard.)

Or, if our composter gets too full, we take it to the compost center in downtown Fairfax. (See picture 3 of compost center in downtown Fairfax (located behind city hall).)
